Career Education

Career development at a national level has become a priority.  The Australian Blueprint for Career Development has provided a mapping tool to ensure all Australians, young and old, look at lifelong learning, managing change and career planning.

Industry was asked to define what skills they, as employers, identified.

Here are some of the employability skills they focused on:

  • Communication and team work
  • Problem Solving
  • Self Management
  • Planning and Organising
  • Use of Technology
  • Initiative
  • Enterprise.

My aim at Ursula Frayne Catholic College, as the Career Coordinator is to provide opportunities for our students to develop and practice these employability skills.

My role includes coordinating our formal Year 10 Career Education classes and our highly successful Years 11/12 INSTEP program.

In Year 10 Career Education we focus on helping our students match their individual skills, talents and interests to a future career pathway.  The year culminates in our Job Seeker’s Seminar when the students demonstrate their interview skills to employers.

INSTEP is a structured work placement subject offered to motivate students in Years 11 and 12.  It provides students with the opportunity to learn and gain credit for work skills. It compliments/reinforces school learning and helps them to confirm or reassess their career choices.  It is recognised as a subject for graduation, can be used as additional TAFE entry points and provides students with a Skills Profile which is useful for future employers.  To find out more just go to www.instep.wa.edu.au

I also provide individual career coaching upon request, as well as structured parent/student career interviews for Years 10 – 12 during Term 3.

My Career Coordinator’s office is located in Student Services or email me johnson.maureen@cathednet.wa.edu.au.
